How to move an eSIM to a new phone safely

Transfer an eSIM with less risk: check support, secure both devices, use official transfer tools, and verify service before erasing the old phone.

Confirm the path before touching the old phone

Do not start by deleting the old eSIM. First check whether the exact new model, regional variant, software version, and carrier account support a direct transfer, carrier activation, QR activation, app-based activation, or another process. The answer is not the same for every phone or carrier.

Apple says iPhone eSIM setup can use Quick Transfer, carrier activation, a QR code, a carrier link or app, manual details, or carrier assistance; available methods depend on carrier support. Its Quick Transfer prerequisites include signed-in devices, an unlocked old phone, Bluetooth, proximity, and a specified software level. Treat that as an example of why an official, device-specific path matters, not a universal procedure.

Set up a clean transfer window

Back up important data. Charge both devices, update them, and place them on a private, trusted connection. Keep the old phone unlocked and with you until the new line works. Sign in to the phone maker account on both devices only when you recognize the prompt. Never let a remote “support agent” ask you to read out an account password, passcode, QR code, or verification code.

Start inside the new device’s mobile settings or the carrier’s verified app/account page. Follow the onscreen instructions exactly. A legitimate carrier may require an identity check; if you are unsure, end the conversation and contact the carrier through its official support route. Do not accept an unsolicited message that claims a transfer is “waiting” unless you independently confirm it.

Verify before you wipe

After activation, test the new phone in a practical order: check signal, place a call if the plan includes voice, send and receive a message, and test mobile data with Wi‑Fi turned off. Review the carrier account to see that the expected line is active. Apple notes that when a transferred plan activates on the new iPhone, the previous SIM is deactivated. Your provider can have different timing or instructions.

Only after you confirm service, protect the old device or prepare it for sale. Use the secure pre-sale cleanup guide. If you receive an unexpected transfer prompt, compare it against SIM-swap warning signs and protect any activation material with the QR-code guide.
